The setting is the Taisho era. Sumi, who has been oppressed by her family because she was born from infidelity and has never known love, is offered a marriage proposal. She goes to the meeting with a faint hope that she might be happy, but to her surprise, her suitor tries to rough her up. The terrified Sumi is saved by a man named Sotaro Mashiro.
